Why you should never leave a glass of water on your bedside table?
Having water handy in the evening seems practical. However, leaving an uncovered glass of water on your bedside table can be more risky than beneficial.
Professor Stéphane Gayet, an infectious disease specialist and hygienist, warns that this harmless habit can harm our health without us realizing it. It can cause bacteria to multiply, become contaminated by dust and insects, and impair our sense of taste.
Why choose a safer alternative?
Breeding grounds in a matter of hours
Stagnant water is an excellent environment for the growth of bacteria and yeast. Unlike a tightly sealed bottle of water, a glass of water exposed to atmospheric air accumulates microorganisms over several hours, which can disrupt the balance of oral flora.
Why does this happen?
Atmospheric air carries bacteria and mold spores, which settle on the surface of the water.
Your own saliva, if you’ve ever drunk from a glass, can promote the growth of germs.
Warm water (at room temperature) accelerates the proliferation of microorganisms.
Drinking this water in the morning causes a mixture of microorganisms to enter the mouth, which can disrupt the balance of the mouth and digestive system.
Insects, dust, and dirt: invisible dirt. A glass of water is a veritable magnet for pollution. At night, it can be exposed to:
Dust: Fine suspended particles settle in it.
Insects: Mosquitoes, flies, and other small pests can venture into it and even drown in it. Chemicals: If you use sprays (perfumes, air fresheners, mosquito repellents, etc.), these substances can contaminate your water.
Drinking water exposed to these elements first thing in the morning isn’t very hygienic.
Excessive nighttime thirst: a sign not to be ignored
