Do you sleep with the air conditioning on? Here’s what it costs you

When temperatures don’t drop in the evening, it’s hard to get any sleep without a nice cool breeze. Many people leave their air conditioning running all night. But when it comes to the bill, the question arises: how much does this nighttime comfort really cost? Spoiler: the bill can quickly add up… unless you know a few simple tricks!

Freshness that comes at a price… by the kilowatt

Air  conditioning is a comfort that has become almost indispensable during periods of extreme heat. However, it is not without consequences for your electricity consumption. On average, a domestic air conditioner (  wall-mounted split  or  portable monobloc type ) uses between  1.5 and 2.5 kWh per hour . This of course depends on the power of the device, the outside temperature, the insulation of the home and even… the size of your room.

A quick calculation? With an average rate of  €0.20 per kWh in 2025  :

  • For  2 kWh , count around  €0.40 per hour
  • Over an 8-hour night  , this comes to around  €3.20
  • What if you leave the air conditioning running  24/7  ? That can amount to  €9.60 per day, or almost €70 per week!

Suffice to say that over a whole summer, the bill can quickly become unpleasant…
