๐ง โ ๏ธ Strokes: Warning Signs and Types You Should Know
Strokes are extremely dangerous and can have severe consequences. ๐ Therefore, itโs essential to remain vigilant and consult a doctor as soon as you notice any warning signs.
Every year, strokes claim many lives. It occurs when a blood vessel in the brain becomes blocked or ruptured due to a blood clot. At this point, the brain cells no longer receive oxygen, leading to rapid cell decline. This requires urgent medical care to prevent long-term damage.
While strokes may seem sudden, some warning signals can appear about a month beforehand.
๐ The Different Types of Stroke
Itโs important to know that strokes are not all the same. There are actually three types:
๐ Ischemic Stroke
Also known as cerebral infarction, ischemic strokes make up 85% of cases, making them the most common type.
-
If an artery supplying blood to the brain becomes clogged with cholesterol-rich plaque (atherosclerosis), itโs called cerebral thrombosis.
-
If a blood clot obstructs the artery, itโs termed cerebral embolism.
๐ Hemorrhagic Stroke
Less common, hemorrhagic strokes account for 15% of cases. The primary cause is a ruptured aneurysm.
According to the Ministry of Health, other factors such as tumors, hypertensive crises, and various bleeding disorders can also lead to cerebral hemorrhages.
โณ Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
Though not a stroke in the strict sense, a transient ischemic attack (TIA) occurs when the blocked artery resolves itself without leaving any sequelae.
-
The symptoms are similar to a stroke but last only a few seconds or minutes, then completely disappear.
-
Because of their transient nature, TIAs are often overlooked or mistaken for malaise.
-
However, itโs crucial to stay alert and dial emergency services (15) if it happens, as TIAs still carry a risk of stroke.
