Old Fashioned Stuffed Cabbage Rolls
Ingredients:
For the Cabbage Rolls:
- 1 large head of cabbage (for rolling)
- 1 lb ground beef (you can also use a mix of beef and pork for more flavor)
- 1 cup cooked rice (preferably white or brown rice)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg (to bind the filling)
- 1 teaspoon salt (or more, to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme (optional, for an earthy flavor)
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley (optional)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional, for depth of flavor)
For the Tomato Sauce:
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (with juice)
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar (to balance the acidity)
- 1/4 cup lemon juice (or to taste)
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (optional, for tanginess)
- 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional, for a smoky flavor)
