Got this ‘Poor Man’s Steak’ recipe from an Amish friend. Delicious! Doesn’t feel like I’m skimping.

Instructions:

For the Steak:

  1. Mixing the Ingredients:
    • In a large bowl, combine 1 pound of ground beef, 1 cup of bread crumbs, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper, 1/2 cup of milk, one small finely chopped onion, and one beaten egg. Mix until well combined.
  2. Shaping and Chilling:
    • Shape the mixture into a loaf or rectangle and place it in a greased pan or baking sheet. Refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight to firm up.
  3. Baking the Steaks:
    • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
    • Once chilled, slice the meat mixture into thick steaks and place them on a greased baking sheet.
    • Bake for 25 minutes until the steaks are cooked through and browned.

For the Gravy:

  1. Thickening the Broth:
    • In a saucepan, whisk together 2 cups of beef broth and 1/4 cup of all-purpose flour over medium heat until thickened.
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste.

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  1. Boiling and Mashing:
    • Peel and cube 6 large potatoes and boil them with 4 cloves of minced garlic until tender, about 20 minutes.
    • Drain the potatoes and mash them with 1/2 cup of milk, 4 tablespoons of butter, salt, and pepper until smooth.

To Serve:

  1. Bringing It All Together:
    • Pour the savory gravy over the baked steaks.
    • Serve the steaks with a generous helping of garlic mashed potatoes.
    • Complete the meal with your choice of vegetables or a side salad.
