- 1 cup (240 ml) of warm water
- 1 teaspoon of baking soda
- 2-3 drops of peppermint essential oil (food grade) or 1 teaspoon of fresh peppermint leaves (optional)
- A clean glass or cup
Instructions:
- Prepare the Water:
Heat the water until it is warm but not boiling. Warm water helps dissolve the baking soda more effectively and is soothing in the mouth. - Add Baking Soda:
Stir in 1 teaspoon of baking soda into the warm water until completely dissolved. Baking soda acts as a natural mouth deodorizer. - Add Peppermint:
- If using peppermint essential oil, add 2-3 drops into the mixture.
- If using fresh peppermint leaves, crush them slightly to release oils, then add them to the water and let it steep for 5 minutes before using.
- Mix Well:
Stir the solution thoroughly to ensure the baking soda and peppermint oils/leaves are evenly distributed. - Rinse Your Mouth:
Take a sip of the solution and swish it around your mouth vigorously for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Make sure to reach all areas, especially the back of your tongue where odor-causing bacteria often reside. - Spit Out the Solution:
Do not swallow the rinse. Spit it out into the sink. - Repeat:
For best results, repeat this rinse 2-3 times daily — once after waking up, once after meals, and before going to bed.
Additional Tips for Maintaining Fresh Breath
- Brush and floss daily: Use a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste twice a day, and floss at least once daily.
- Clean your tongue: Use a tongue scraper or toothbrush to remove bacteria from the tongue surface.
- Stay hydrated: Dry mouth contributes to bad breath, so drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Avoid odor-causing foods: Limit consumption of garlic, onions, and strong spices.
- Chew sugar-free gum: This stimulates saliva production and helps wash away food particles.
- Regular dental check-ups: Visit your dentist twice a year to rule out any dental problems.
