What Attracts Spiders to Your Home — and Why You Shouldn’t Kill Them

Spiders that enter your home can be alarming, but there’s no need to panic — and even less reason to kill them. These small creatures, while sometimes intimidating, are actually valuable allies in controlling pests such as cockroaches and mosquitoes.

1. What Attracts Spiders to Your Home?

In general, spiders are drawn indoors because your home offers them shelterpeace, and a reliable food source. According to entomologist Professor Matt Bertone of North Carolina State University, it’s actually wise to leave household spiders alone.

In an article for The Conversation, Bertone shared findings from a study in which he and his team analyzed arachnid populations in about 50 homes across North Carolina. The results were eye-opening: spiders were everywhere — often hiding under eaves or in corners — though most remained out of sight and caused no disturbance.

“I know it might be hard to convince you, but let me try: Don’t kill the next spider you see in your house,” Bertone wrote, before listing several compelling reasons to spare them.

2. Why You Shouldn’t Kill Them

Spiders can offer several benefits when they take up residence in your home:

  • They prey on pests, including flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, and even other spiders.

  • They help maintain ecological balance by naturally regulating insect populations.

As Bertone points out, spiders don’t want to harm you. In fact, they prefer to avoid human interaction entirely. We pose a far greater threat to them than they do to us.

Moreover, spider bites are extremely rare, and in most cases, their venom is harmless to humans.
