4. Sprinkle Diatomaceous Earth
Food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) is a non-toxic powder that kills ants by drying them out. Sprinkle it along baseboards, under appliances, and around entry points. Just make sure it stays dry—moisture reduces its effectiveness. It’s safe for pets and kids when used properly.
5. Try Cinnamon
Ants hate the strong smell of cinnamon. Sprinkle ground cinnamon around their entry paths and anywhere you’ve seen activity. You can also soak a cotton ball in cinnamon essential oil and place it near problem areas. It disrupts their scent trails and discourages new ants from following.
6. Make a Baking Soda & Sugar Trap
Mix equal parts baking soda and powdered sugar in a shallow dish. The sugar attracts the ants, while the baking soda reacts with their digestive system once consumed. It’s slow-acting but effective, especially if you place the mix near trails or nest entrances.
7. Use Essential Oils
Certain essential oils double as natural ant repellents. The most effective ones include:
- Peppermint oil
- Tea tree oil
- Lemon eucalyptus oil
Mix 10–15 drops with a cup of water and spray it around baseboards, window sills, and door frames. Reapply regularly for best results.
8. Vinegar Solution
Ants can’t stand vinegar. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Use it to clean counters, floors, and areas where ants have been spotted. It not only kills them on contact but also erases their pheromone trails.
