Maintaining proper blood circulation is critical for brain function, particularly as we age. Poor circulation can cause blood clots, increasing the risk of ischemic stroke, which is the most frequent type of stroke. Fortunately, regular physical activity can considerably lower the risk. Here are five basic workouts that enhance good blood flow and general cardiovascular health.
1. Walking (30 minutes daily)
Walking is a simple and efficient way to enhance circulation. A vigorous walk boosts the heart rate, increases blood flow throughout the body, and lowers blood pressure. It’s a low-impact workout that can be done anywhere and is especially beneficial for elderly persons or people with joint trouble. Aim for at least 30 minutes per day, five days a week.
2. Leg Raises and Ankle Rotations
If you spend a lot of time sitting, whether at a desk or on a long vacation, these exercises are necessary. Simply lift your legs one at a time, sitting or lying down, and hold each lift for a few seconds. Continue with ankle rotations in both directions. These movements increase circulation in the lower limbs and help avoid blood clots in the legs, which can occasionally go to the brain.
